Champions League

The Champions League was founded in 1955 as the European Champions Club´s Cup (often abbreviated to European Cup). This competition is held every year in a different country of Europa. This competition has changed its rules, name and organization over the years more than once. The European Cup wasn´t a UEFA competition at the beginning, but it was started as a French initiative by the L´Equipe (French for ´the team´). They didn´t care about the best clubs of their respective countries, but the teams with the most fan appeal were invited to join this league. The European Cup was renamed to the Champions League in the 1992/1993 season. This was a big turning point for the Champions League, as the rules changed and it changed into a UEFA competition instead of a L´Equipe one. In the 1997/1998 season another big change was made. The Champions League changed its qualification system. Before this season only the previous cup winner and the winning team of every participating country were allowed to join. Now also teams that didn´t win the national cup of their respective countries had a chance to enter the Champions League. The new system allowed these teams to enter, if they were good enough according to UEFA. This was done because it made the Champions League more exciting and UEFA brings more sponsorship money in.
